Should I major in History or Math?

I have to choose something i want to major in, and i’ve beginning to enjoy math, a lot. But, i’ve always loved history. I also want to major in something that has many job opportunities. I don’t want to have two majors either.

If you like math, and want job opportunities, why not go into engineering or Operations Research is an applied mathematics that has good job openings.

Well, math has more job opportunities than history right out of college. But, it also depends on what you want to do. If you get a masters degree, you’ll have more opportunities in both fields, although perhaps more in math because of its usefulness in business. But if you chose to pursue a law degree or go into journalism, a history degree will be beneficial. Why don’t you consider majoring in one and minoring in the other. That way you’ll get a broader education in college, you’ll do what you like, and it will look good to future employers and grad schools

You’re doing it backwards. What career do you want to do? What major will get you there? Because with math & history you’d have to get at least a Masters to get a job, probably a PhD, so before spending 10 years of your life, maybe you should have a goal in mind?

Math! It’s awesome. Mathematicians make more money than historians unless you choose to use your math skills to teach, then not so much. You could become an actuary or statiction (sp?) or you could do other things that I can’t think of right now, but there are lots of options for math majors that pay a lot. I can’t think of anything a history degree would do for you.

I would recommend the Math course but only as a minor, and instead pick an applied science like Engineering and so forth as your major. The problem with a Math major is that it is so general and scholastic in its application, it makes most employers (such as any technology, financial institution, etc) have a tough time seeing how such a major will apply to their operations.

Go for math! If you have a good math background you can pick any interest later. It’s a lot of work, and you’ll meet some weird people in it, but you’ll have the ground work done for whatever field you’ll be drawn to.

Neither. Major in something useful like an applied science or medicine.

Math–hands down! Math will open many more doors. Being good in mathematics is becoming a lost skill–especially for women!
