should i be a pharmacist or psychiatrist?

well i’m a junior in high school now and recently i’ve been trying to decide whether to become a pharmacist or a psychiatrist… psychiatrists make around 150K a year and pharmacist only make around 80-90K a year but then again to become a psychiatrist would mean 8 years of school and seems like a stressful job, but the almost doubled income is really why i can’t decide on which to pursue.

Think about what sorts of things you like to do. Do you like working closely with people in an intense counseling sort of relationship? If so, you may choose psychiatry. If you like a somewhat less intense, though also stressful job, then pharmacy might be for you. Also consider working environment, interactions with people, etc.

Check out pharmacy!

Here is why:

1) Most starting salary is 75-150k depending on location and need

2) Most jobs are the usual 9-5

3) You will finish faster compared to medical school

4) You will not have to deal with blood, other than your own from a paper cut. As a doc, you will be exposed to blood, guts and human bodily fluids all day long.

5) You will get the chance to see and spend time with family

6) You will get a job anywhere because there is a pharmacist shortage in the US

7) It is a clean and nice environment!

Good Luck with your decision!

Psychiatrists are considered by other MD’s to be on the lowest rung of the physician ladder. Some do not even consider them as real MD’s. If you are interested in going to med school you should go into the surgical specialties or something like Radiology, Anesthesia, or Pathology. They pay the most and are in short supply. If you pusue psychiatry, at least you can call yourself “Doctor” and be self employed as a professional.

Pharmacists work for hospitals or do retail work, do not have as much status, and are employees just like the store clerk.

You could become a psychiatric pharmacist. Average full-time pharmacist salary in the U.S. is a little below a 100k. You can’t apply to most pharmacy colleges until you’ve had at least 2 years of college.

no one can answer this for you. You have to decide which one would make you happy. Don’t let it be all about the money…also you are still young…have an idea but don’t limit your career to just 2 things. There is soooo much out there.. GOOD LUCK

Don’t go by how much they pay. They are totally different professions. You have to choose a career that is satisfying regardless of the pay.

Become a pharmacist.

Psychiatrists do almost nothing but write scrips.

It all depends on which career you would want to do and what you like better.
