Question about college major?

I heard that it might be easier to get into a college if I choose a major that not many people choose–does anyone know if this is true? I know that if I do choose an unpopular major and get into the school I can just change my major later to something else that I find I am interested in.

(And just to let you know, I am at the moment still undecided)

It is somewhat true. Some people do get in this way, but they have lots of trouble getting out of the major they declared to the major they desire, and thus they are stuck with some crap major. Why don’t you try going in as an undeclared in the college of whatever you plan on majoring in. Thats what I did. I knew I wanted to do biology, but there were many fields, so I just went in undeclared in the college of L&S, and declared my major during my 2nd year. Good lucky in college!

Don’t go into a major simply because not too many people choose it; Choose the major you’re mostly interested in; If you have a passion for what you want to do, you’ll be fine.

If still undecided try taking the general courses such as college English or math; it should buy you some time until you decide and most of the time, these classes are easily transferable if you decide to change schools later.

There is at least some truth to this at some colleges. At some other colleges (especially some large public universities), there are different admissions processes for certain popular majors like business and engineering, especially if they have separate colleges of engineering, arts and science, etc. At those places, it could be quite a risky strategy.

Also, if for example, you haven’t taken Latin in high school, and you say you want to major in Classics, the admissions officers might figure out what you’re up to, and it might actually hurt you, rather than help you. The other thing is that the unpopular majors are often things that are very difficult, so choosing them with marginal grades and test scores might not help you very much – the admissions people might think you’re not really capable of doing that major.

I know for sure some majors are impacted, which means that there aren’t that many spots but there are a lot and a lot of people wanting to get into it.

I don’t know how easy it is to change majors. At some colleges it’s really hard and at others, it’s super easy. It depends really.
