Psychiatry differences?

I would just like to know the main differences between Psychiatrists and Psychologists?

I know there’s a differences in education, prescription in medicine, and payment, but by how much?

Can Psychiatrists also help with emotional problems such as counseling like psychologists?

What are the differences in salaries?

I would really like to be prepared for these career options.

Any information would be great, thanks.

Psychiatrists usually don’t deal in depth with your emotional problems. They do chart your history and symptoms, prescribe medications, and see you periodically for a medication check (see how you’re doing on the meds, do you need more, need less, need a different med, etc). They leave the actual counselling for problems to a lesser-paid individual, usually someone with a Master’s degree.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor, who studied medicine like any other doctor and then specialized in psychiatry rather than surgery or gastroenterology, etc. A psychologist is someone who studied psychology not medicine and who has a master’s or PhD in psychology. A psychologist cannot prescribe medications because he isn’t a physician like a psychiatrist is.

So if you want to be a doctor who specializes in psychiatry you will have to prepare for medical school with a lot of science and math courses. If you prefer psychology, then you will need lots of philosophy, sociology, language, communication, psychology and such.
