i am a sophomore in high school right now and i just got my PSAT scores back and i was wondering if i could get a little perspective. i know i can’t qualify for a nat’l merit scholarship this year because im a sophomore but i was wondering what kind of a chance i PROBABLY have based on how i did this year.
i got in the 96th percentile for critical reading
96th for mathematics
99th for writing skills

You did well! I took the PSATs too this year as a sophomore and got similar scores, a little lower. Keep in mind your percentiles are for sophomores and younger kids, not juniors. The percentile you are in is the right of those numbers, under your selection index. I think you have a decent chance of qualifying next year. I’m guessing you got around a 200 or so because I got a 183 with percentiles of 93, 98 and 91. So you are only a couple of points added on to each score from making NMS. If you can work hard, study, and raise each score by at least 5 points I think you have a very solid chance of making NMS. Good luck!

Those scores are fantastic for a sophomore. I improved from a 187 to a 219 from soph. to jr. year WITHOUT studying or prep courses. Your percentage in the top right (overall percentile) will help you figure out what chances you have. If your % is a 99 or 98 now, you will most likely be a semi-finalist after next year’s test. Once you are nominated as such, you will have to go through an application process. The great majority of these applicants become finalists for the scholarship. 40% of these more or less 1% are given scholarships based on GPA and extracurriculars. The test score is just a way to reduce the pool to a manageable size. Your test scores will let you become a semi-finalist, the rest will be up to you. Good luck.

considering that’s probably around a 200? not much unless you can up you score to about 235 or so, which would be incredible. only 40% of the top 1% gets a scholarship, so you pretty much have to be in the 99.6% percentile to earn a scholarship.
