There’s all kinds of ag scientists–if he’s interested in livestock breeding and disease, then a degree in biology followed by veteranary college and finally a PhD in biomedical research would work (and it would be back-breaking for any but the most competent and dedicated). If it’s for developing new crops and growing techniques, then a bacelor of science degree in botany and/or ecology would be the minimum, and a master’s or Ph.D. would be better.
