I’ve never seen a college that doesn’t allow it, but I would certainly recommend otherwise. It’s hard enough adjusting to the college lifestyle to begin with, but to do it completely on your own, no roommate to go through it with, and to deal with the struggles of college apartment life at the same time, that’s just more trouble than it’s worth. Sure, it’s great to be truly on your own, but living with others in the dorms doesn’t mean you aren’t living on your own. It’s just that you are living with a community of people all going through the same transition. It is a great way to make friends and to ease into the routines of college. Plus, there are tons of people and resources to help you out with anything you are having trouble with, from your homework to your neighbors. I personally had some bad experiences with apartments in college, and would certainly not have wanted to have to deal with them while I was still dealing with getting used to being in college. And if you don’t want to share a room with someone else, my college offered single rooms in the dorms. But I definitely think colleges discourage freshman from living off campus, especially by themselves, and I would as well.

Common enough. On campus living sucks, try your best to get off campus housing.
