I’m sorry, I wish I had marketing experience of any kind so I could help – saw your question last night too.

The best I can come up with as a layperson who’s been to college is this, which you have probably already done:

– Look at their website; do you have questions you can ask to show interest or suggestions on how to improve the marketability of the website?

– Check out other college websites in the area, their marketing depts. – they might have info. you can use as a sound bite or two (not in a plagiarizing way, just a jump-start on one or two points to make)

– Is there any market research specific to universities that would be helpful to glance at and include in your interview?

– You might ask them essentially this same question rephrased, so that you are again expressing interest in and thought about the position

– You could call another university’s marketing dept. and ask if they’d give you a few tips for an interview or even simply tell you how being at a university marketing dept. differs from the typical private sector.

– You could get together what you think you’re wanting to say and check with a job referral agency to see what they think – most of them will give quick free consults via phone (though they may spam call you later to try to get you to sign on with them)

That’s all I can think of. Hope this helps. (:

Some key marketing questions I’d ask:

1) How does the marketing position at a university differ from a typical private sector marketing position?

2) What skills from someone adept in private sector marketing be applicable in this position? (Assuming you’ve worked in private sector marketing.)

3) What are the critical success factors for this position? What are the benchmarks to demonstrate success?

4) Marketing is often described as driving sales and profitability through advertising, new product development, research and the like. How are these implemented at the university level?

Most importantly, is BE THERE ON TIME!! Another very important thing is to ask question. Most of the time, the interviewer will ask if anyone has any questions. Ask important questions and maybe bring a notepad or something to take notes. When the interviewer is picking his future employees, you’ll definitley give him something to remember you by.

Oh, and dress appropriately and act outgoing and interested in everything he is saying.

Hope this helps!!!

Any experience you have. Use specific examples of any projects you have worked on. Explain how detail oriented you are and how you can multi-task. Describe any difficult situation you faced and how you solved it. Be positive, upbeat, professional and pleasant. Good Luck!!
