Is there an age when getting into a university becomes less likely?

Basically, I’m 24, and just recently began going back to our local community college. I would really like to work toward transferring to a major university such as UCLA. But my counselor has recommended that I take things slow and only start with a couple of classes per semester for now, to solidify my GPA. My worry is that I won’t even be able to apply there, or anywhere for that matter, until at least 26.

So my question is, realistically, how much does your age play a role in being accepted to a university like that? If your grades are good and you show that you’d otherwise be a successful student, is it at all likely they would bump you for somebody who has a similar application but is 5-8 years younger?

There are no age limitations. It really has to do with how serious you are about school. I have been out of school for 10 years now and I would say that it is better to be a little bit older when you go to college. You don’t have all the distractions that the younger girls and guys have. You have partied a little bit and you know the importance of studying and giving 100% at school. Good for you! P.S. A university cannot disqualify you based on your age.

to be honest, i think you would have an advantage. To a an admission’s person who is constantly looking at young highschool kids, who are often out of control or at the very least not sure where to go in life, you will appear as a more mature and responsible (goal oriented) individual. I’ve heard that 40% of freshmen fail out, mostly because they are young and not ready. You are far less likely to follow suit.

go for it.

I don’t think that you will ever be discriminated against on account of your age when applying to a university. A lot of schools are looking for diverse students who can suceed. As an older student you add diversity to their campus. As long as you can show that you are a good student you should be fine.

I’m not impressed with your counsellor’s advice. Starting university at 24 is not even unusual any more. A minority of my first year class consists of students right out of high school. If you feel you are ready, jump right in.

Good luck.
