If you are talking about computer software engineering and measuring success of graduates by income of recent BS graduates working in industry, then University of Illinois – Urbana is the top school. But, if you measure success by number of articles published or by number of patents the answer would be different. Also the interests of faculty vary. Carnegie-Mellon is tops in writing programs to simulate human thought and expert systems. So, you see the question needs to be a lot more specific for a good answer. MIT is a very selective school. In 2003, over half of the entering freshman class had perfect scores on the college enterance examination and everyone graduated either first or second in their high school class. There are many other excellent engineering schools in the USA: Cal Tech, Lehigh, Carnegie Mellon, RPI… It depends on what kind of software engineering you wish to study and what you consider the measure of success to be.

ABSOLUTELY, MIT is the best school the world for Engineering, any type of it. There, not only will you learn the theory behind computer programming, but you will also have projects where you design programs that meet certain aspects. It’s rigorous and tough, but graduating from MIT with Engineering is pretty much a guaranteed job.
