Is it worth studying something if you like it but it has no relevance?

Is it worth studying something if you like it but it has only minimal relevance to your life or future career?

Is it worth putting yourself through the stress of uni essays, time, costs, etc. if you are unsure if you will use it and you don’t know if you will even finish your degree?

What you are asking, in effect, is whether there is any value to education that is not direct job training. And the answer is that universities are built on just that value system. They’re not meant for job training, but to teach you about the wider world and the people in it. You study history to learn what people have done, philosophy and religion to learn how they think, art to learn how they express themselves, and the liberal arts to learn how they relate to each other and their conditions. You study sciences to learn how the world really works: what life is, where we are in space, and how everything is put together. You learn mathematics to learn the basis of reason and ways of solving problems.

And when you’re done, you’re qualified for no job in particular except the very important one of living life without being bored, scared, and gullible the entire time you are allotted here. An educated person isn’t easily fooled by silly preachers and financial charlatans. He finds joy in small things and doesn’t need constant professional entertainment. He can judge new situations accurately and adapt to them, whether personally or at his job.

So yeah, it’s worth studying things. If you want to go to college for job training, don’t: go to a trade school. But if you want an education, you need a university, and education is in general more valuable.

I assume that you are debating a major in something that has no future job prospects. If that is the case, I have two suggestions:

1. speak with everyone you can to get a better picture of what your future will look like in that field and decided if it is worth it.

or

2. that’s what electives and minors are for – to study what you like, even if it is not in your future.

what i have learned in my 43 years on this earth is this.Just when you think you won’t need something, the situation arrises that you end up needing it.even if the situation isn’t career related.allow me to present an example for you.

when i was in junior high school in my literature class the teacher tried to teach us sign language.and at that age alot of us paid no attention as we figured we’d never need it.

when i was 22 and gave birth to my youngest daughter,i learned when she was 6 months old that she was deaf.thus i had to learn sign language in order to help her learn to communicate with me and others.

so give everything offered to you a chance.learn all you can no matter how irrelivent you may think it is.you just might need it at some point in the future.

Absolutely! If you like something, pursue it. It doesn’t matter if it will only provide minimal relevance or benefit your career. Do What You Like, Like What You Do!

together as this isnt an incredibly good degree, some employers merely require a level of ANY variety. it could desire to help you land a job, and could be a commencing element for a BA or BS later, as a lot of your middle instructions will already be accomplished. it is likewise greater effective than in hassle-free terms a H.S. degree and could provide you an ingredient over different pastime applicants who merely have a H.S. degree.

You will be forced to study lots of things in undergraduate work that are not relevant. As long as your major is relevant

If you don’t know what you want to do yet but you are interested in something it is a good idea to go ahead and get a degree in it. Once you have a degree in something you can do just about anything…most companies don’t care what your degree is in as long as you have one.

Yes, in your spare time. It is a pleasure. You never know you will need it somehow. We can learn from almost everything and someday we gonna need it. And yet, prioritize what’s relevant to you though.

Well, I think so. If it was what you truly love and want to do, then I think you should study it. You will never truly have a successful career if you don’t enjoy it, anyway, so why not go for it?

Any knowledge that appeals to you is good. What is knowledge? Just a word. But if you apply your knowledge you have gained wisdom.
