The far and away best thing that you can do is to get an Internship. Part Time jobs are good, but an internship gives you some real corporate based experience. A foreign language could help, if you are planning on hanging out a shingle and trying to serve everyone that comes through the door. But if you are planning on being a corporate CPA, then that will likely help less. Studying hard for good grades and actually passing the CPA are your main things, getting an internship is a solid #3 though.

Yes!!

I know first hand as a senior accounting major. Besides an internship you need to join an accounting organization, either a professional or a student chapter. It’s what all the public accounting firms are looking for now. They want to see that you have the personality for dealing with clients and working in a team environment. They also want you to be proactive about meeting all the requirements for taking and passing the CPA exam.

Keep in mind that a high GPA will take you farther than a foregin language. Also, have internships or accounting related job, and try to be active in accounting activities and organzations. This means accounting case competitions and various accounting societies.

Do an internship if possible, but only in the area you’re interested in and with a ‘real’ firm that is respected (i.e. don’t do an intern at Mom&Pops Taxes R Us). Otherwise, just find a part time job in the area you are interested in. Foreign language proficiency is always a plus no matter what field you’re in.

a part time job will help you to add more boost to your resume, you will need it after you have finished your degee for a full time job/career, as most companies today seldom hired people who doesn;t have experiences likewise, you have more edge to other applicants if you take the CPA exam and passed it plus the job experience you noted on your resume.

good luck!
