The United States has 2 types of medical degrees (which produce physicians who can examine patients, treat with medicine and surgery) Allopathic (M.D degree) and Osteopathic (D.O. degree). There are other types of physicians such as Chiropractors (D.C. degree) Naturopathic Doctors (N.D or D.N degree) Homeopathic Physicians (various degrees very few) these are not ‘traditional’ western medicine they do not perform surgery or administer drugs.
Dental surgeons (DDS and DMD) do perform surgery on the mouth, head and neck and prescribe drugs they are common mainstream practitioners in the States.
Optometrists (OD degree) examine eyes and fit eyeglasses and contact lenses. They are mainstream practitioners in the States (contrast with Opthomologist – and MD or DO who can perform surgery on the eye. Also contrast with Optician who makes eyeglasses according to orders written by Optometrists or Opthomologists)
There is a Common Medical School Appliaction that many but not all medical schools use in the USA. It is simply a common form there is no central admissions office.
All students applying for admission to a medical school in the US take the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) and this score is an important qualifier.
The licensing test for US trained physicians is the USMLE.
I have included some links below.
You may also wish to consider local studies and then take the examination for foreign students more information from the URL below.
Good luck.
