I want to be a vet: how to prepare?

I am a junior and I’m sixteen. I have a part time job, so I can’t do any volunteering, since I have to pay for my gas and insurance. How else can I prepare and look good on college applications? Also, can I start applying to colleges as a junior, or do I have to wait for my senior year?? HELP any info is greatly appreciated. I’m white, female, and live in Kentucky. GPA: 3.1 All a’s and b’s. Good student, don’t skip school, no e. curricular activities, but in choir, yearbook honors geometry, bio 2, and chem 1 this semester. help plz 🙂

Research schools in your area with good vet programs (both UT Knoxville and Auburn in AL have excellent programs). Take any extra or advanced placement biology classes that you can next year. Apply for any and all scholarships you can. Talk to your guidance counselor about it. But don’t stress too much; my brother got a BS in Physics and then decided to go to vet school, and he got in (he had around a 3.5 college GPA). Good luck!

The biggest tip is to start now. Whatever you can do with animals will help you with your vet program admissions. I graduated from Purdue, one of the best vet schools in the country. You can’t just choose veterinary medicine as your major as a freshman – its good that you know it noe.

Since you need to make money and don’t have volunteer time, try to find a job with animals. An animal shelter, boarding kennels, or animal daycare are all good starts. Also, many vet clinics hire people such as yourself to be aides – help with taking care of overnight pets (walking, feeding, etc.) Or, if you live in a rural area, try to become a hand on a ranch or at a stable.

Also, contact schools now. You will not actually be applying, but write letters of interest to all vet schools you might consider attending. They will be very glad to send you informational packets and the admissions counselors can give you the best info. about how to prepare for applying, being admitted, and entering your freshman year. Plus, when you actually do apply, someone may remember your name and remember that you had to foresight to contact them early.

So, work with animals now.

Contact schools now.

Keep up the good work in high school, and take whatever science classes you have available.
