I’m in College and I feel super overwhelmed?

Okay, I’m a freshman in college. I’ve been studying my @ss off literally for sometimes 7 hours a day. I have had to juggle HW, Rush Week, Activities, Cleaning, Job, Family, and Moving(just moved) and everything else. This is all new to me and I feel just stretched out!

Do you guys feel this way as well? I am exhausted and barely have any time, even on weekends, to just chill and watch TV or play XBOX. In HS all I had to do was occassionally HW every couple days for several hours and that is it. I could usually chill at my house or with my friends, watch movies, run, play XBOX. But no more. I feel so rushed now!!! I want my HS days back!!!

I’m pretty organized and perfectionistic, but what are your recommendations in balancing this time? And I still want to have ample time to relax too at my house.

I hope I get used to it.

Welcome to college. Part of life is learning to figure out which things are really important and which things you can do without. Do you want good grades or do you want lots of leisure time? If you want grades, then you have to sacrifice your leisure. It is possible to have fun and do well in college, it just takes a lot of discipline. What I did as an undergrad was get a day planner (any brand will do) and figure out exactly when and where I was going to do everything. It doesn’t lessen the workload any, but it’ll help you feel less stress because you have a plan. Also, make friends who have similar goals as you. Few things are harder than trying to tell friends who want to play that you have to work.

Studying 7 hours a day as a freshman seems a little high. Are you being as efficient as you can? I would really look hard at what you’re doing when you study and see if you’re wasting time anywhere. There’s nothing wrong with changing the way you do things, and as often as necessary. College will require different study habits than HS, especially if you were used to goofing off a lot.

Good luck !

I think almost all people felt this way when they started college…I know I did. I didn’t do as many activities as you do now, but I did study quite a bit. You will find that allowing yourself to slow down and relax will help you in the long run. I’ve never done the Greek thing, but I’ve heard that rushing is very involved. Once that is over I bet things will calm down. For activities, choose only 1 or 2 that you like most and you can add more later if you feel you have time.

High school was an easier time, but that is because most were still living at home, didn’t have to be as independent, and the classes you took were structured for you. College is a great opportunity to become independent, but it will take time to figure out what schedule and lifestyle works best for you.

What I found really helpful my freshman year was going to the university counseling center. I just talked to a counselor about being stressed out and how I was having a hard time getting used to college. This is their job, so they completely understand and can give you suggestions.

You will get used to it. Just give it time…most things in life are hard at first. And good for you for studying by the way! Most students don’t even try at first and learn the hard way. Good luck 🙂
