I agree with Spirit, definetely business or marketing.

I am an Interior Designer, and I have a Master in Business; It definetely enables someone to stand out.

A lot of people have an unrealistic view of this field… This profession is not about picking up pillows and nice paint colors, but about delivering a job on time, that will fulfill your clients expectations.

It doesn’t matter how equisite your taste is, bottom line, you’re dealing with business people, and you need to be up to the part…

Definitely get a minor in something that is directly related to the Interior Designing you want to do. View this as a systems problem…look for all the building construction specialists you must talk with in order to have your design be successfully implemented in the complex system of constructing a new building, in an existing building (with or without remodeling), or restoring a historical building.

Consider the simple fact that Interior Design is more than just filling up and decorating the inside of a building or room. Think about:

1) what other professionals do you have to coordinate with on a typical project? Architects, engineers, building inspectors, health inspectors, etc. Well, there are communication skills need to bridge the technical specialties to minimize confusion and errors.

2) what are the safety issues in general and specific issues that affect interior design work that are inherently linked to or originate from the non-interior design areas of the project? Fire safety, toxicity, indoor air pollution, ventilation, insect infestations, water damage, severe storms, seismic safety, kid safe environments, ADA (handicapped) issues, elder, etc.

3) what are some cultural differences that affect perceptions of space, color, values, comfort (ala Feng Shui or other beliefs) that could affect your designs? Are your potential clients predominantly from a specific ethnic group?

4) Languages (related to culture)? Do you see international opportunities for yourself in the future? After all, everyone keeps talking about the global economy.

The ideal match, from my opinion, would be a complimentary integration of your personal interest (a key motivational factor in successful study) in the subject of the minor and its functional / technical supporting role to your major.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.

Think about what you want to design. If you want to do homes, there must be something related to finance you can get into. How about medical buildings? Then you may want to look at a specific medical technical field, like say, a pre-nursing program or even a two year nursing degree. If you want to design for ocean liners, get a history or geography minor.

You have to be creative. Try to apply your minor to your primary interests.

Entrepreneurship (Business)

Addendum:

I’m surprised you rejected my response. Think about it! Interior Design is a business. You have to understand the business side if you want to be successful. Therefore business courses couldn’t hurt — i.e Marketing, Accounting, Investments, etc. If you still think learning business is a bad idea then at least buy “Business Mastery” by Sohnen-Moe & Associates.

Sometimes its better not to minor. You might have to take more classes. Or just wait and see, you don’t have to decided on a Minor right away.
