How should I study for the GRE?

I am applying to very good master’s programs in school psychology (although not ivy league schools). My undergraduate GPA is a 3.97 in psychology. I am interested in competing for tuition scholarships and assistantship stipends.

That being said, is it worth it for me to spend the money on a Kaplan class ($1,150), because I generally don’t do well on standardized tests (my SAT’s weren’t much to write home about… or should I save the money and just buy a Kaplan test prep book?

I was in a similar position to you about a year ago. The GRE is not fun, there is no way around that. What I would suggest doing is getting test prep book, and signing up for a test date. When you sign up for a date, you get a CD that will simulate the testing computer program.

The first key to the GRE is practice. You have to feel comfortable with the testing style that they are looking for.

The other key is the vocabulary. The words that they expect you to know are unbelievable. The “words” are best tackled with the help of the test prep book. Practice, practice, practice! Make flash cards, read newspapers with big words (I found the Financial Times quite helpful – with the vocab and with the writing sections), etc.

The best way to study would be reading up word lists, and attempting a lot of practice tests. You should also not just look at the scores you receive on the practice tests but also analyse your weaknesses and improve on the same. Ex.) If you get a low score in Math, it might be because of certain type of questions, figure them out using internet reference and move on to the next category. There are some good sites you can use.

I’m taking the GRE soon, too. I bought the Princeton Review “Word Smart for the GRE” book and it seems to be helping. It’s the only test-prep book out there that I can actually bring myself to study, and they make it as interesting as it can be.
