How much stuff fits in a dorm room?
typical college dorm room, one other roommate. I’ve got a car trunk full of stuff… how much stuff can fit in a dorm room (without being really obnoxious as far as intruding on a roommate’s space)

Not much. My universtiy provies each of us with a dresser, desk, and bed. they also provide a micofridge (mini fridge, freezer, and microwave on top. There is barely any floor space between the two beds, we have no room for extra chairs (besides desk chairs), or a couch or anything. I wouldn’t bring extra furniture, unless you have a really small folding chair. Just bring sheets, towels, clothes, etc, and count on storing alot of it under your bed. Find out what your college provides and if the beds are moveable (if you can bunk your beds, it leaves more floor space), and then talk to your roomate and decide what each of you is bringing.

I would say probably not. If you’re like most college freshmen nationwide, your dorm will be in one of two configurations: -a double. You share with one roommate. If the girls are with you, then you can keep track of your stuff, so no problems there. If you’re not there, you only have one roommate to contend with, and the chances of your roommate’s guests taking your stuff are near zero. -suite style. In this case, you’ll probably either have your own (small) room or share a room with one other person and a suite/ bathroom with 3 others. Since only one of the three others (at most) has access to your room, there isn’t really anything different from the double. If you’re in a triple without separate rooms, then there will probably be more people coming and going, but during my entire freshman year, I never heard of a single person having anything stolen. Most roommates are at least decent enough to not steal your stuff or allow their guests to steal your stuff, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. As someone else said, however, think simple and don’t bring anything worth a ton of money. I get that you will have some expensive stuff (computer, printers, iPod, etc), but beyond that, I can’t think of anything that you should have that costs over $100 to replace.

Not very much. Have you and the roommate talked to coordinate who is bringing what? It is silly to have two television sets or microwaves. Both probably need computers. It also depends on what the school will allow you to have. Some allow cooking in the rooms, and some do not. The college where I teach doesn’t even allow candles or incense to be on display because of a previous fire. It has been a long time since I was in college, but two items that I didn’t think I would need and took because my mother told me to were an ironing board and a sewing machine. Other girls RENTED them from me.

Talk with your roommate and make sure you know who is bringing what. You can always bring more stuff later on, but you don’t want your room cluttered. Divide the room in half if you’d like, so that you each have an equal share.

you’ll have some storage but usually just the essentials for school and clothes. My dorm room was like a small box, even the furniture that was in there didn’t really fit that well.
