You can major in anything for your undergraduate degree. It’s best to not major in library science, since you’ll be limiting yourself that way. Very few schools even offer this as an undergraduate degree anymore, and most libraries respond more favorably to applicants with an undergraduate degree in another area as this means they have broader knowledge they can bring to the job.
College/university and large public libraries often have subject areas specialists, especially in reference and collection development. If you are interested in this type of specialization, then you should get your undergraduate degree in the subject area you’d like to specialize in. The specialties that are the hardest to fill are in the sciences. Business is usually the second-hardest to fill. English and literature are common undergraduate majors for librarians, but they do not make you stand out.
Librarian salaries vary greatly. They depend upon what position you have, what library you work at, the size of the library you work at, the size of the institution that funds your library, the geographic area you live in (including rural vs. urban areas), if it’s a supervisory or management position, and how long you’ve had the job.

There is a major in library science, and a master’s helps a lot if you want one of the better paying and more challenging university jobs.
