I don’t know what country the other person answering this is, but I’m an attorney, and in the U.S., you first spend four years in college, and you can major in anything (although a major which demonstrates that you are capable of extensive reading and writing is an advantage). Then you go to law school and that takes 3 years full-time; if you go part-time, it generally takes 4 years. There is no such thing as a residency for lawyers; once you finish law school, you study for and take the Bar exam and then you can begin practicing immediately.

You have to know the answer to this. 4 yrs. of college with law or pre-law as a major. Three yrs. of law school itself and residency. In some cases 4 yrs. of law school and and a bar exam.
