How long do college credits last?

I was in college (a major university) a few years ago but then I quit for a while to join the Marine Corps. I definitely want to finish my degree when I get out but I wasn’t sure how many, if any, of my roughly 80 semester hours will carry over.

All of them should, especially if it was a major university. Welcome back and good luck with your education! Thank you for your service.

That will depend on your university and program. You will always have credit for the classes you took, but they may not be usable towards a degree. Will you be attending the same university? Usually the credits will carry as long as you miss no more than one or two semesters.

Some programs will allow past credits and some only if they were earned within 5 years of reentering, but since you were in the Marine Corps, they may give you a waiver since they would not consider it as dropping out and then reentering. The only way to know for sure is to contact the university, explain your situation, and ask for their policy. Different schools and programs will have different policies. Why not check to see if your university offers on-line or correspondence courses so that you can continue to earn credits while still in the service? Contact your university advisors and get the specifics from them.

Part of this depends on your major, and on what college you’ll be going to. But in general, many colleges don’t accept credits that are more than 5 years old – but not all! For others, it’s 10 years. And if you plan to go back to the college that you started at, there’s a good chance that many of your old credits will still be good. You need to speak to each college one-on-one.

It all depends on the class most will not be accepted after 5-7 years. Would you be able to do online classes while you are in the Marine Corps? If so you can do that before they expire, however best choice would be to contact your school.

depends on the class. most colleges will accept credits as long as they are less than ten years old.

hard sciences such as physics and chemistry, et.c. don’t “last” as long since new breakthroughs come pretty quickly in these fields. the best way to find out is to check with the college where you’re thinking of applying. they can tell you if your credits are still good.
