I guess it matters where you are. I live in Indiana and it really isn’t that hard. Everyone always tells you it is horribly difficult. I actually found high school to be more difficult. It matters what you are studying I suppose. I am an English major and I love it which is probably why it isn’t too hard. But occasionaly I find a class that is really hard. You just have to learn how to budget your time to allow for studying but also for having fun. You don’t want to be totally stressed out worrying about everything. I have found in my university the 100 and 200 level classes are sometimes much easier than the 300 or 400 level classes. Just take control once you get there and it shouldn’t be too bad as long as you pay attention to your grades and don’t fall into a hole that you can’t get out of.

I’d say it would depend on several factors. One that you should definitely consider is the level of preparation you’ve had prior to attending a university. For those students coming out of rigorous private schools or public magnet schools, they have a better idea of what to expect. If you’ve had experience with enrichment programs at universities, or have had the opportunity to do research with a professor, you come away with a better understanding of university academics. A second factor would be the school which you are attending. You have top-level schools which are very academically focused and ridiculously difficult, such as University of Chicago, Columbia, Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, University of Calif – Berkeley, and Cornell. These are obviously more difficult than some of your less competitive state schools, because of curriculum variations, faculty experience, and research work. It’s a general belief that the more selective a university is in its admissions process, the more difficult its curriculum will be. There are some excpetions to this, such as Brown University, which lets you design your own curriculum and allows you to take every class pass/fail, despite being Ivy League and only admitting 13% of applicants. The last factor would definitely be major/concentration. I have a friend who is currently at Stanford University and taking classes in computer science. This is reputed to be Stanford’s most difficult major. English Literature at Princeton is not as difficult as Physics at Princeton. So I hope I’ve clarified at least some of your thoughts.

In Malaysia, it would be as hard as your ‘A’ Levels, or maybe even easier if you work hard enough. But, overall, no sweat if you follow the lectures, do your assignments, finish up your revision early and ask a lot of questions in class.

I myself had one of the hardest exams in the world, the STPM.

STPM level = A levels.

Uni is made to make you more intelligent, and to increase intelligence you generally have to think. So if you go to uni, be prepared to work a bit and think a little, simple as that
