How do you get to really know your professor without kissing his butt?

I need to be more proactive, I’ve never really got to know my professors because I was to shy. How do I get to know him or her in a friendly manner?

-participate in class

-Stay after class to talk about something they mentioned in class that you thought was interesting

-drop by his/her office durring office hours to say hi or even ask a question about an assignment

-say hello when you see them in the hall

It’s important to build up a relationship because you may need letters of recommendation in the future–the more they feel connected to you then that much better the letter will be.

I’m in college & doing field work in a high-school with teenagers and looking at it from a point of a teacher at times it can be a bit difficult to get to know all of your students or even a chance to chat with each of them like you would like. When students initiate conversation I love it although I’m usually the one to spark up conversation.

Good luck!

1. Always attend class, no skipping

2. Sit in the front.

3. Pay attention to the lecture.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

5. Do the assigned readings, and ask about the reading.

Attend his office hours. Ask him questions about the material, anything that you don’t understand or would like to understand better. Or just chat with him about life in general. Ask him what other classes he teaches, or what he is currently researching.

Don’t think of him as this huge and terrifying figure – he’s just a person, like you. Talk to him like you would anybody on the street.
