If you’re a truly outstanding student, then it won’t matter at all. There is a myth that the most selective colleges are only looking for “well-rounded” students. That’s not the case. What they are looking for are people who will be future leaders in society, whether in academia, politics, or business.

What they don’t want to see is someone who doesn’t do anything except assigned schoolwork, and then things like XBox and hanging out at the mall with your friends. They aren’t particularly impressed by a laundry list of extracurricular activities that you probably don’t enjoy.

So the real question is: what do you enjoy most? Do that. The most impressive things will be the ones that you enjoy most, because they will show that you have pinpointed a passion in life, in which you are likely to be highly successful. If you don’t really know what you like, then try a few things, and see which ones you want to stick with.

Your high school will probably have a variety of clubs, plus musical activities, a drama club, academic competition teams, and school publications. You could also get involved in community service activities. Any of these will be impressive if you get seriously involved in it.

There are a lot more activities than sports out there. Music – choir, band. Any number of clubs – chess club, math club, photography club…. Participation in the school newspaper and year book, student government… volunteer organizations…

Sports gets a lot of press but it is actually a small fraction of what goes on at a university. Of course the best club to join is the straight A club.

Of course! Think about Stephen Hawking – can you imagine that someone that brilliant would be kept out of college because he has a physical disability? There are so many other things you can do – the arts, politics, community service, yearbook. The idea is that they want a well-rounded person, but sports are not everyone’s interest.

Any extra cirricular activity will look good on a college application. Add lots of hours of community service. Art, band, newspaper, debate, sports team manager, cheerleading, you name it. There is plenty of opportunities for you in high school.
