First paragraph has in it three points to the topic you are writing your essay on.

Second paragraph is dedicated to the first point.

Third paragraph is dedicated to the second point.

Fourth paragraph is dedicated to the third point.

Fifth paragraph is a summery of the three points and why you have those points it ties everything together.

A good essay is 5 paragraphs. First what is going to be talked about, then three points and last the summery of everything you talked about.

To get these if you do not have them you need to make a map of the topic.

For example your essay is “Why are SUVs better than cars?”

First of all noted this essay is pro SUV so we need to think of all the good points of SUVs.

They are built tough, they last longer. Those go together as one point.

They have more room, they can haul big loads. There is a good second point.

They do not bog down on hills, they can go off road. Nice third point there!

Now we have three points, now we think of what to write for the essay maybe something like this.

Opening paragraph.

SUVs seem the best choice to buy, they are much better than cars.

They last longer, have more room and can go off road.

Next paragraph first point.

SUVs are built tough, they can take many years of wear and tear. A car does not last nearly as long as an SUV does.

Next paragraph second point.

When you need to haul big objects, owning an SUV comes very much in handy. SUVs have a lot of room in them. You will never be stuck wondering how you will fit anything in it.

Fourth paragraph, third point.

When you want to go off for a nice camping trip deep into the woods owning an SUV is a must! SUVs will easily take you to any off road destination: even where there are no roads at all!

Last paragraph the summery.

Buying an SUV is clearly the best choice as they last longer, have much more room and you can travel anywhere you want even off road! Buy an SUV you wont be sorry.

That is one example I could have wrote up one for why cars are way better than SUVs just as easy.

Keep on topic, order your points so they get better as you go not less. Here is an example of two points in the wrong order, and the right order.

I was at the ball game today, I caught a fowl ball! I also had a hot dog to eat while watching the game.

See that is lousy that would make a poor speech! You excite the people with wow he caught a fowl ball then you say something trivial like you had a hot dog?

But now look at this one same paragraph reworded.

I was at the ball game today. I had a hot dog while watching the game, I also caught a fowl ball!

See how much better that is, go from less to more always in your points, build up do not let down.

– organize your thoughts. write a concept map first.

– have a dictionary/thesaurus handy beside you

– keep it concise. no need to be wordy.

– if applicable, share your own experiences and what you felt about that.

– use metaphors.

– keep the end sentence simple, but full of impact.
