How do I answer this question on a job application?

What are your strengths and weaknesses when relating to other people?

I’m not sure if I can say anything other than I empathize with others when I can.

Well, it’s hard to answer that for you. Especially not knowing what kind of person you truly are or what type of job you are applying for, but here are some ideas:

Strengths: listening skills, your ability to relate and interact with a variety of people, your ability to understand others opinions/views/ideas even if you don’t agree, your ability to “read” people or sense moods/emotions and interact accordingly.

Weakness: pet peeves about others, personal bad habits that annoy others around you, phobias or social anxieties.

It would help of you can give some personal examples or experiences with each answer you give as well. Nothing inappropriate or too drawn out and boring… just enough to explain your answer and give the employer/interviewer a better image of what the point is.

Say you’re a good listener and a good communicator. You genuinely care about what other people have to say.

As a weakness, you should always put something that’s actually a good thing. In this case, I’d say something like… People tell me that I’m too nice. Or, sometimes I worry too much about hurting other people’s feelings. Or, I’m constantly trying to do or say the right thing.

Good luck! I hope you get the job!
