How did you decide what to get your degree in?

I’m 28 & a mother of 2 girls (one is 7 and one is 8 months). I started college 6 years ago & finished my freshmen year- just taking the basic credits you need for anything. I finally started back this fall semester . Originally I was going to go to school for Interior Design, then I kind of got talked out of it by my family (they said, “no guarantee you’ll make money or get a job doing it” )and they suggested nursing. All the schools have at least a 5 year wait for nursing- so that’s out. Then I decided to do Radiologic Technology (ie MRI’S & Sonograms) but the only school w/ a program for that has classes 8am-8pm- the schedule isn’t flexible.. with 2 small girls- i’d never see them. So how did you decide what to go to school for? My heart is def in the arts area- i took a bunch of electives this semester and they are all art classes… webpage/photoshop to interior design for offices to Jewely etc.. Any suggestions on how to figure out what to do?

Well for starters continue to take electives or basic core clsses that u know will transfer or qualify for the majors u r looking into to. Then gradually see how u like the courses and what interests you the most. Please, sometimes its harder to not listen to others when they talk about money but in the end u will be working in that field not them. Do something u & ur family will be happy with for life, something that will make life a lil more enjoyable.

I know my family urged me to go into the pre-med or nursing, but i cant work with crazy ppl on a daily basis and none the less take it home w/me everyday, plus a lot of hours. So i decided to go into the science field (chemistry), like research & development which covers a lot of industries so i can do a lot with the degree. Hold fast & stick to what makes u happy cuz in the end ur opinion is the most important. Good luck!

I can only see that you are totally confused, hence here is my piece of step by step advice to you

1. Relax and make yourself comfortable

2. Look back your past the academic life.

3. Think of your goals, what exactly you wanted to become or acheive? is it Money? Is it Independency? Is it fashion? so on…

4. Think if your goal could use your acedemics that you have with you.. because you have already spent a lot on it. Hence touching a new avenue without considering what you have on your hand may lead you to another doom.

5. If yes, try to find out what kind of opportunities that field has; you can look around the classifieds and job sites for openings on that area. Which will tell you how much demand that field has.

6. If yes, then try finding the key points from those classifieds and search for suitable courses. By doing this you won’t loose your time and efforts spent.

7. Time may be a constraint if not money, then you need to wait. It doesn’t mean you are a looser, infact stronger bases are plotted with greater plans which are simply time consuming cycles. It is easy for us to grow with the kid. Which means you have a new begining very soon as your 2nd kid is too small and she is started her learning process.

8. If you are interested in nursing start practice your nursing within your house. 😉 I’m sure you will see a new world around you very soon. While starting this you can also register your name on the queue, so you waiting time at home will be utilized very effectively. You will learn the basics with your kid while your priority increases on the school.

All the very best for your career and education. Life is a school try to graduate.

Honestly, if you were to go to school and get a degree in a field that makes “for sure” money, like nursing, then you will have a job but will you be happy doing it?

For me, I have three degrees; I have a 2 year Associate’s Degree in Marketing and Mangagement. I have another 2 year Associate’s Degree in Computerized Business, and then I took time to earn a Doctorate’s of Science in Metaphysics.

With all my degree’s, I took courses in things that I had an avid interest in. All of those fields interested me, so it made it easy for me to persue those degrees. With the 2 associate’s degrees, I was a single mother and went to school during the day. I also worked part-time— and to be honest, it was tough having to be in class for 2 years to complete the programs.

Then, years later, I took an interest in Science– particularly Metaphysics, and learned that there was an online school where you can work at your own pace and take 100% of your classes, quizzes, and exams online. So, I paid for the courses and it took time, but I did earn my Doctorate’s degree. Now, I don’t do anything in that field as far as my career, but I am a business owner (I design websites, logo’s, marketing publications, etc.) and I also work full time as an Office Manager/Safety Administrator, so I make use of my degrees. My pay is decent– not what I would like to be making, but I am doing something that makes me happy which you should do.

If you like the arts, then think about what makes you the happiest… do you like to create things? Are you good with your hands? Is music your thing? You just need to ask yourself what would you be happy doing– then see what careers are associated with that degree. If money is important to you, then take that into consideration. In ANY career field, you can have a degree but only those who have the WILL and DRIVE to achieve what they want will make the money and succeed— and you can do whatever your heart desires if you want it bad enough and WORK HARD to achieve it…. don’t let anyone ever tell you that “you can’t” do that…. just look at Bill Gates and where he started from.

I wish you all the best!

I didn’t know what to get into so I got a BA in Business. When I finished college, I got in the field and realized that was not what I liked…I liked computers. So I taught myself and am a network engineer and am 36. Now I’m thinking of changing. But most importantly, you will need to consider your family obligations. Nursing requires lots of studying, and once you get the qualification its long / odd hours as well. I suggest do what your heart likes, you will get a job no matter what, but what sustains your interest will make you enjoy the other parts of life. If you get into something you don’t really care for, then it will affect your personal life too. Good luck!

I am thinking of going back to school to get a degree in history (I an 59). I have chosen to live my life as I want to. Life is short do with it what makes you feel better.

Good luck with your choice.

Education is an investment…and like all investments, there is no guaranteed return.

Here’s what I suggest: Pretend you won the world’s biggest lottery and would never ever have to work or worry about money forever. If that were true, ask yourself what you would do to keep from becoming bored each day. (write the list on a sheet of paper…but make 3 columns, and make your list in the left column. Then fold up the paper and put it away for a few days.

A few days later, take out the list and look at each item carefully. For each thing you like to do, try to figure out A) what is so intellectually/mentally exciting about it for you? (and put those things in the center column)….and then B) what physical activity is associated with the things you like to do (and list those things in the right column).

When you are done, you have an inventory of the things you like to do, and why you like to do them (knowledge and skills). No the grand prize is to figure out what job exists in the world that deals with your areas of interest that requires the knowledge and skills you either have or are interested in….so in essence, you want to find a job that pays you do to do what you would normally want to do anyway.

Know yourself: Make use of the SCANS list from the US Dept of Labor (you can use this link to get a copy of the lists http://www.neighborhoodlink.com/public/clubextra.html?nclubid=893282700&nid=268367529

There are a number of ways to use these lists. Start with a self-inventory. Then use it to inventory a job description for any job you might be interested in. The closer the match, the higher the probability of success and enjoyment in that job. You can also use the lists to inventory what you learned from any classes you take….and to see if the classes are giving you the knowledge and skills needed for the job you want.

Learning is life long…so don’t feel there is any particular schedule to get a degree. First and foremost is the very serious undertaking and responsibility of educating your children…and much of the foundation begins at home, now, when they are young and you can manage the things in their world (for a while anyway).

Web design and such can lead to working at home….and the web design area does NOT require a diploma….it requires creativity (something this is difficult to teach / learn). But working at home is not easy and is not all the paradise it seems…takes lots of organization and discipline to pull it off.

Considered online courses? not necessarily for a degree or certificate…but for enrichment and to keep or hone you study skills. Lots of free stuff out there (no fees, but no credit either)…don’t get turned off by the no credit….some credit classes could be a real bear for you…so take them free online for refresher or to prepare so when the time is right and you have to pay tuition, you are primed to go and ready for success.

No matter how saturated a field, the world is always looking for GOOD workers. The key is to apply your knowledge and skills to get results in a timely and cost effective manner…that’s how companies make money to be able to hire and pay your salary.

Had you considered trying to regroup what you have now and turn it into something that can work for you rather than following the pattern set by others? I mean, take the children, your interest in art, and (I am assuming, your interest in the education and development of your children)…and create learning activities involving art projects for moms and children? Start with doing some things and “test” driving them with you children and some good friend with children. Once you find a bunch of things that work, start a group of moms and children….they pay a small fee to cover the cost of the materials….you do the activity, print up and get them to complete an “evaluation” form.

With a proven track record, you go to a community center or a community college and propose to do a “workshop” for a fee (to cover materials and something for your time and gas. Spread over a group of 12-20, (remember, its for moms and their children…so you don’t have to play nanny to everyone’s children), the cost per family is relatively low. They have a neat fun, art project, family activity that enhances child learning and if its quality time for the family.

After your children are grown and a bit more independent, you may have more time to get back to a formal traditional educational setting. But in the mean time, you have prepared yourself mentally, honed you organizational and study skills, and will be primed for more success.

Give it a try…you might surprise yourself. Don’t lock into a “career” before you even being the studying. So many folks think of the career…go to school….get out and start working in that field and find they don’t like it….then either have to start over or transition to something else. Better to go with your love and passion…best way to assure yourself of doing it well or even better than most others…and this will pave the way to success and most of all, personal and deep inner satisfaction and joy….life is too short to NOT enjoy it. Remember, no one ever got out of life alive.

Good luck with your future and your life in general.
