There are basic concepts and principles in all fields that must be learned. In architectural design, you must understand construction and what it takes to build a structure before you can design them. What good would a design be if it were structurally unsound and could not be built?

Architectural design is more than drawing beautiful buildings. You need to know a great deal about how the building will be used. For example, how do calculate how many restrooms an office building needs? What about duct work for AC/heating, electrical, plumbing, etc? You want to draw a beautiful cantilevered extension on your building–what is the structural load? Does is need steel supports?

Think of it this way, before you build a house, you have to have a good foundation. You don’t start with the roof. The same is true when learning something new. A strong foundation of knowledge of buildings will prepare you to add a great ‘roof’ of design.
