How come kids aren’t allowed to discover?

I want to continue my research using lab equipments and libraries, but I can’t find any facillity that will allow me as a teenager to do so! I really think that if someone gave me the chance I can really go somewhere with my discovery; I have already done some research and I have found out shocking results-why can’t I continue? why can’t I discover?

It’s probably a matter of protection from liability if you should screw up badly. Also called “insurance coverage”.

Then there’s the cost of providing you with the place, the uninterfered time, the basic resources like electricity and/or lighting.

(1) Are you prepared to pay for the facility, or is someone or some agency ready and willing to pay for your presence and use of resources?

(2) Are you prepared to indemnify the facility for harm that might befall you as you experiment? If not, whose insurance will cover your injury or death? Do you have such insurance?

(3) Who will guarantee that you will not cause property damage or hurt other people? How will that be guaranteed?

(4) Who will watch over you if you’re alone and the facility suffers a catastrophe, like an unrelated explosion or a flood or the roof falls in?

Are you now ready to say that you will assume ALL responsibility?

Would you like the library to be open just for you? Will you take the same responsibility for it as for the research location?

Have you offered MONEY to cover all these problems? The true costs probably don’t exceed a few thousand dollars per week!

Are you ready to wash a few cars or mow a few lawns?

Have you volunteered your parent as the person who will watch over you AND the facility? Why not? We want you to succeed!!!

You sound bright and highly motivated. University libraries will issue you a card or accept your library card. Does your school have an early college entry program? Colleges actually compete for people like you! Contact a Veterinary office/hospital and volunteer. When they get to know you ask for some equipment privileges. Call the police department and ask to volunteer in the crime lab. If you have a little money you can go online and buy your own lab equipment, just basic supplies, and tell the labs you will bring your own equipment so they don’t have to supply it. Contact the volunteer coordinator at a hospital and tell them your goals and see if they can get you into a lab. Make signs about your interests and post them in the college’s science building and see if a student is willing to mentor you. I have done all of the above so I know it can happen for your too!! Best of luck to you!! You have what it takes to be great in this world! Don’t let anything stop you!!

I think you should go to a science museum near you and ask to be sponsored.

Many museums are kind enough to lend their equipment for such experiments, therefore you should write them a nice essay [a well- written essay is found to be apealing , wich is a plus ], explaining what you will be doing and how you will be doing it (since it’s their equipment). Make sure you include you being 100% responsible with the equipment !

**Proofread your essay many times before the big moment**

Should you have any problems further on, contact your science teacher and ask her for advice, if she has no responses , then I suggest you go to your principal, he or she might have the right connections that you need. No harn in trying is there?

Best of luck.

Depending on your age and studies you should be able to find a college willing to take you on as an intern. I would need to know your age and studies to be able to help. I have post graduate studies in law. I have two (2) years post grad, because I was, at the time, making more money than an attorney with 3 years experience working in a firm. Felt I could do more with my under graduate degree. Which I actually did. That is why I didn’t finish law school.

Well if you need a really good library if you know anyone that attends a college, ask if you they will take you to their library or go to your states capital and use their best library if possible. Next talk to your science teacher(s) about lab equipment and the best places to find resources.

maybe they don’t want to be involved should anything freaky happens during your experiments and research since you are still a minor (if you are…).

maybe it’s just their policy not to let unauthorized personnel to use their facilities.

maybe they don’t have enough equipment for you.

maybe they don’t think your discovery is a real discovery. they don’t think your research is suitable for them.

it could also be because you are not a student of that university. you need to pay lab fees to use the equipment.

First, get your idea on paper and get it copyrighted. Then, go to local university library’s and continue research on your own. You don’t need permission regardless of your age. When you go to Harvard, use their labs and continue your research. Hold your idea close to your vest because there are many who will steal it.

Good luck–I hope you change the world.

Honestly, companies feel there is too much liability. That and if you find something out, its hard to patten it to you (and only you) since you are a minor.

Talk to one of the Science teachers at your school. See if they can get you in somewhere. Sadly, many times connections make a world of difference.

Write a letter explaining to the facility owner exactly what you’re trying to do with their equipments.
