A thesis statement should be ONE major sentence in your introductory paragraph. It is usually the last sentence in this paragraph, although they do not have to be. (They’re easier to write when they are the last.) Okay, just think of an essay as only five paragraphs. The thesis should have three major points that you wish to explain, discuss or persuade to the reader. Each of these points should be the discussion for each of your three body paragraphs. For example, if I was going to write an essay about lipstick (I know, off the wall…), I could start my intro paragraph by b.s.ing about lipstick and its history:

“Lipstick has been worn for many years by women as a tool of beauty. Its first known use around 5000 years ago in ancient Mesopotamia involved coloring the lips by crushing semi-prescious jewels. (Thesis:) However, lipstick in the twenty-first century now has many uses, comes in a variety of forms and is a major business factory of the beauty industry.”

(You’d elaborate on the history part, but this thesis is fine enough. You want to plainly list the three parts that you will be talking about in the paragraphs to come.)

Okay, now you take that sentence and create your three body paragraphs. Your first body paragraph will talk about the many uses of lipstick. These could be beauty, theatre, halloween, etc. Think of as much as you can and elaborate. (ex: Just as the ancient Mesopotamia used lipstick as a beauty tool, the women of today’s society still list beauty as one of the top priorities of their lives. From models to stay-at-home mothers, every woman has the need to feel beautiful. Most women use lipstick as part of their daily routine.)

In the second body paragraph, you should talk about the forms of lipstick for the 2000’s. (ex: gloss, matte, long-lasting, tubes, jars, pencils, what it’s made of, etc.)

The third paragraph should tell about the roll of lipstick in the business industry. Give statistics of revenue and examples of marketing (as in modeling, magazines, using actresses as cover girls, etc.).

Your fifth (and last) paragraph just closes your essay by overviewing what you’ve talked about. (Ex: Since lipstick has been part of history for so many years, it is unlikely that this beauty tool will ever absolve. Surely, there will be more uses for it in the future, businesses will continue to strive and conquer others in the field with better materials and colors and by designing new forms to meet the next modern society’s needs.)

Remember:

Intro: discuss, b.s., give history, then do thesis (3 main points)

1st body: elaborate first main point

2nd body: elaborate second main point

3rd body: elaborate third main point

Closing: overview main points and elaborate on these depending on the type of essay (persuasive, informative, etc.)

It helps to develop a thesis by

1. getting your topic

2. make a list of things that you think about when talking about this topic

3. take that list and try to come up with three categories that you can divide each of these into (the title of the category can become one of your thesis points–just be sure that it makes sense in the context of your writing)

Hope this helps you!!
