They can. More likely they wll put you on “academic probation” for a semester and take away financial aid until you make a satisfactory improvement.

This happened to my sister. She shaped up, though, and everything turned out fine.

The time to act is now! Don’t wait. There is help for students who fall behind. Contact the office of Academic Services or Academic Affairs (it’s called different things on different campuses) and let them know you are having trouble. Be honest, tell them you are behind and you did make mistakes, but make it clear that you DO want to succeed in college and you are willing to put forth the effort. Meet with your adviser, they are there to help you. If you don’t have and adviser, get one NOW. Academic Services may have you sign a contract and set up regular meetings to examine your progress. Whatever you do, don’t miss them, attend whatever you are asked to attend and do your best, if you really want to stay in school you can fight for it.

Meet with each of your professors (if Academic Services doesn’t set a meeting up automatically) and ask them where you stand. Explain to them what you discussed with your adviser and the Academics office and make up a plan to make up the work you missed and bring up your grades. If there is one class that the professor says is beyond saving your grade, you may consider withdrawing from the class, but be careful – there are a number of reasons you don’t want to go below full time status: you could lose your insurance, mess up your billing, etc. Read your catalog, find out how many classes/credits you need to be a full-time student.

Different schools have different retention rules. You may be placed on Academic Probation before you are dismissed. But it is still early in the semester and it is possible to bring your grades up, you just have to be committed – keep the late nights for the weekends and next semester sign up for afternoon classes. Use the services on campus that are available to you – having a tutor is great, also talk to your adviser and the Academic office to make a plan to get you out of the mess and back on track – just make sure to do it now, the longer you wait the less willing your professors will be to help you.

Best of luck!

most schools do put you on academic probation if your gpa drops too low and then they will kick you out if you don’t raise it. Go talk to your profs and see what you can do to catch up in class.

cut down on the partying. you’d be better off to quit completely, but that’s not realistic. just don’t be a dummy and get wasted on school nites. a lot of the guys i work with at the burger joint partied themselves out of school. they all wish they had just told their party hound friends to go on without them. it’s hard to do, but they won’t be there to temp you very much longer.
