Good colleges all over New York State (including The City and Upstate)?

If someone could give a list, some experiences, etc. anything to help me narrow my choices. I live in Long Island, am able to go to school in the City and live at home or get a dorm anywhere in the New York area. My grade is a 93 and SATs are pretty good. Tell me all you know

Princeton Review has a tool on their web site that allows you to filter schools by a number of criteria — including by state. They also have a tool that allows you to enter information about your background and interests and then suggests universities that are appropriate for you. It also has lots of admission statistics and other information on lots of schools.

The link is below.

That being said — the best universities in New York are Columbia, Cornell and NYU. The state university system in New York is not quite as good as in other states. There are probably 20-30 state universities that are better than the best public university in NY. That being said, the SUNY schools that are located in Binghampton, Stony Brook and Buffalo are all decent public universities. New York also has several good liberal arts colleges like Vassar and Hobart. The best Catholic university in the state is Fordham.

NY state has some very good colleges. Some of them are among the best in the nation, but there are really good schools for people who are good students, like you, but maybe aren’t the top of the top.

The elite schools in NY are:

– New York University

– Columbia U

– The Cooper Union

– Cornell

But, unless you have a special talent, I’m not sure you’d get into any of those.

Other extremely good schools (which, with your grades, you’d probably be a good candidate for), are:

– Syracuse

– Yeshiva

– University of Rochester

– Skidmore

– Russell Sage

– Colgate

– Hamilton

– Ithaca

– Rensselaer Polytechnic

– Vassar

– SUNY Binghamton (#1 in SUNY, to me)

– SUNY Stony Brook (#2)

– SUNY Buffalo (#3)

– SUNY Geneseo (tied for #3, to me)

– Bard College

– Fordham

– Sarah Lawrence

– Clarkson

– Elmira

– Union

– Rochester Institute of Tech

– Barnard

There are lots of other quality schools as well, but these are very, very strong, and your grades are in the right range for them. Depending on your SATs, your essays, and etc., some of these could work out for you.

There are so many, and it really depends on what you want to study and what kind of an environment you are looking for. I would suggest going onto the College Board (www.collegeboard.com)’s college matchmaker feature. You can plug in where you want to go, your preferences and limit the geography, and it will give you a list of schools which match your own criteria.

I went to HOFSTRA – good school. You should pull out a college book and look at all the schools. They will be rated for you so which ones are better than others. ..
