Economics or computer science?

Which degree would be more useful, economics or computer science. If I did economics, I would also earn an MBA from a highly regarded school such as Northwestern U.

It depends on what you plan on doing with either degree. You can’t get your MBA from Northwestern straight out of Undergrad, you have to have work experience after you get your bachelors. Most MBA require that you have at least 2 years of work experience before you apply for an MBA program.

Depends what you’re interested in, guy. It sounds like you’re expecting to find a sort of generic career somewhere, and the world doesn’t work that way anymore.

Get the best _education_ you can find, packed full of liberal arts, physical sciences, math, fine arts, languages, law, philosophy and literature. By the time you graduate, there may well be way too many MBA’s to bother with. The best defense is to learn about the world at large so that you don’t spend the rest of your life being bored, scared, and gullible. The careers–whatever they turn out to be, and you’ll probably have five of them–will take care of themselves after you graduate.

For what it’s worth, either economics or computer science are perfectly good degrees. So is English literature, or chemistry. All have approximately equal utility.

If you plan on working right after you attain your B.S. then go with CS. CS always gets great jobs immediately after college…if you’re good. Companies such as Intel, Microsoft sends recruiters around campuses and if you catch their eye, you’re set. Going econ wouldn’t be bad too, especially if you plan on getting a MBA. Generally students who pursue a MBA get jobs after their undergrad and then apply to business schools after 3-5 years in the working field.
