Dorm and book question?

1) On the first day you move into a dorm, is it uncommon to see parents come along as well? My mom wanted to meet me there just to check out out the dorms/campus because she hasn’t seen the campus yet (I went to orientation with my dad, they’re separated). We both live about 1.5 hours from the campus. Basically, do students normally bring their parents when they move in?

2) I haven’t purchased any books yet and school starts next week. I’ve heard that professors often tell you that you don’t really need some of the books suggested and some are used for solely reference. Should I buy my books before school starts or after I’ve heard what the professors recommend?

Answers are greatly appreciated, thanks

1.) Parents come all the time! My mom and dad both did. It will make the transition a lot easier as well.

2.) I would suggest that you buy your books after you know that you are definitely going to stay in that class. Sometimes you sign up for the wrong class or you dislike the professor. Most of the time they will give you a time window, like get it before next class or whatever.Or talk with people who have already taken the class and find out if you really need the book.

1) I don’t think it’s the students who bring the parents. It’s the parents who want to come along. Going off to college is an adjustment for both the parents and the kid. This is especially true for the first child leaving the house. If your parents want to come along, bring them because they have to go through the ritual of saying bye and realize that their kid has grown up. Don’t worry, you will have plenty of time to start partying. Try to move in early so that you will have a chance to meet other people. You will be surprised how quickly people form their groups.

2) I would buy the books before school starts because the bookstore will be just crazy. You will have plenty of other things to keep you busy. Sometimes books cannot be purchased elsewhere so if they run out, you may have to wait. If you won’t use the book, just return it. Some books are non-refundable so keep that in mind also.

1. My parents always helped me move into my dorm, and yes, especially for Freshman, parents will be teeming all over campus, nothing to be embarrassed about.

2. Wait till classes start to buy books, although it usually doesn’t matter. Even if they say you don’t NEED something you should still have it if you want a better grade. If you decide you don’t want it then most schools do have a return system. They know people will be returning books after a few days because they are dropping a class or whatever, so if you do buy books early, hold onto the receipt and you should be able to return any un-needed books.

1) No, it’s not uncommon for parents to check out the dorm.

2) Don’t buy the books before school. Wait for the first class. Many times you might be able to actually buy used books from other students, and save money. So wait.

1. You’ll see hundreds of parents because they’re the ones moving their kids in so you definitely don’t have to worry about your mom being the only one there ๐Ÿ™‚

2. I would wait until the first day of class that way you could talk to your teacher about how much you really need the book also sometimes you might wind up switching classes. I would just wait to see how important the book is to the class and see if you like the class in general. ๐Ÿ™‚
