Does it really make sense to be able to obtain a masters/doctorate in fields where you never specialised?

..in your undergraduate years?

The foundations would be missing.

Well, it depends on the area. You can learn a lot in a Master’s program without necessarily learning the undergraduate coursework. Master’s level classes are usually more rigorous than undergraduate courses. Also, some fields have licensing requirements that require more supervised work such as internships.

Dana (getting a dual Masters in areas he didn’t take classes in while getting a dual bachelor’s)

In addition, at least half of your undergraduate coursework, if not more, is general education.

Well, for some folks it’s an ego-boost, and for others, getting an MA or Doctorate in anything is a requirement for further advancement in their jobs. Lacking any of that, though, it doesn’t make much sense.
