Does age matter when you get into med school in the US?

I am thinking about studying medicine in the US, but i am planning to work as a nurse first before i get into med school..when i think about it, i’ll be 25 or 26 by then..so does it matter if i’m already 25 or 26 when i study medicine? (well that is if i’ll get into a med school hehe)

and what is the average age of people who get into med school anyway?

thanks.

As a person who works in the academic side of medical school student services, I can tell you that age certainly doesn’t play a role in determining your admission. You could be a genius at age 15 like “Doogie Howser, M.D.” and still get in. What your admission into medical school is based on is your performance on the MCAT Medical Exam, your grades from undergraduate education, and your interest in the area of medicine itself. It goes without saying that the most precious factors of getting into medical school are the amount of time you can devote towards your graduate medical education and the level of committment you focus on possessing. Typically, the average age of people who get into medical school is between 23 and 27, and many people who are older than 27 still get in because of the grades and their work experience (some come in as nurses and some come in as lab techs). It varies, but more likely than not, your situation should not present a problem. Your work in the nursing field will provide extremely beneficial experience that will only make your medical school application look more promising. Good luck!

No, it doesn’t matter. That is illegal in the US for a med school to base your admission on your age. It discrimination.

If anything, this would help you. You would be able to demonstrate that you have more experience in the medical field.

Sorry, don’t know the average age, but I don’t think you would be far from average.

Good for you!!
