I believe it is important. I think that learning to play an instrument teaches kids important things: comprehension, perseverance, discipline, a sense of pride. Of course, I’m probably biased since I took piano lessons for 8 years! I do believe that those lessons taught me more than just how to play the piano… they’ve enriched my personality!

Yes, I think it’s important. And I disagree about what people say about lessons being ‘forced’ on a child. My parents insisted that my siblings and I have piano lessons up through sixth grade or so. Much of the time, I hated them with a passion, and my brother and sister and I almost all promptly stopped playing altogether once we hit 7th grade. However, things changed – my sister plays on occasion, my brother was absolutely fantastic but never plays any more, and after a friend lent me his Coldplay CD, I found some of their sheet music online and gave it a try… right now, I’ve been playing piano for 14 years, and I think all those lessons that I hated as a child were totally worth it in the long run (and now I’ve discovered an awesome new way to pick up guys if there’s a piano around =D)

I don’t think it is important but it certainly is a good thing.

I learnt the piano for 10 years as a child and it’s a fantastic skill to have.

I would recommend the child learn a popular instrument though such as guitar or piano rather than something like the flute, violin, oboe etc.

My reasoning behind this is that they will probably enjoy it more and therefore will be more likely to stick to it.

There are also a lot more popular and modern songs and music available for guitar and piano. This is also a key to getting a child to stick with learning the instrument – get them playing songs they like.

Well that’s my two cents worth. 🙂

Yes… for the beauty, the fun, the creativity, and for that child learning the importance of following rules without the lecture…Rules??? yes, because if the child doesn’t keep the meter and does not play the written notes, the music does not sound good…

yes it is. a study earlier last year proved that children who do sport and play an instrument get a better education. im not exactly sure who proved this but i heard it on the news and its stuck with me ever since.

well definitely it nourishes their soul if they were ready for it. I am planning to teach my baby daughter playing on the Piano. I think that with music they will learn to appreciate life more and music will improve their behavior when they grow up

It’s not important, I think they should only play an instrument if it’s something that generally intersts them, otherwise they won’t learn anything.

its good if they want too but theres no point pressuring them.

it does help develop their brain but so could other hobbies particularly sports like tennis or martial arts 🙂
