Many colleges do allow that now- but not all colleges are not quite there yet.

The college I went to University of South Carolina did allow both. But if you are not very self-motivated becareful of online classes- they are often harder than regular classes (professors try to make them harder because students expect them to be easier).

1) He is not a murderer. By the standards and customs of his country he was perfectly justified in his actions. 2) If you had a professor that was a soldier or police officer before becoming your teacher and they had killed people in their line of work/duty, I doubt that you would react the same way and call them murderers. You would continue in the class and ask questions and maybe learn something. Many people that you meet in your life and some of who will have influence over you, professors, bosses, colleagues have killed people because of their prior jobs, places of residence. There is a world of difference between killing someone and murdering them, your professor killed someone much like the executioner of a prisoner receiving the death penalty. They are not evil people, merely carrying out the proscribe justice to the accused/criminal. Yes by our standards stoning is wrong/immoral or what have you, but in many countries it is standard practice for many crimes, and it is the community not the state that carries out the sentence. Your professor is correct the practice is completely justified. Many Muslim countries have codified Koranic justice into their legal systems, unlike in the west were secular authority has often rebelled against the religious doctrine proposed by supporters and members of religious belief. My advice to you; Go back to class or remain in the class if you have not left. Ask questions, such as why people accept Koranic law as civil law, why is Islam such a communal religion were as others are more of a personal religion with community support. Why have secular Muslim rulers not opposed the Muslim religious leadership to create a barrier between secular and religious. If I went to your school I would be begging to be able to attend this professors class, even if it was not for a grade. The more I can learn the better, especially something this important. For better or worse we as a country are linked to the Muslim world and we as people and leaders of this country need to know how and why these people think and act the way that they do, to help formulate strategy, understanding and build some kind of bridge to close the gap between our two societies in an effort to bring a measure of peace. Most westerners (not only Christians) forget or ignore the atrocities that the church commited against it’s own worshippers and only link about how they treated non-worshippers in other far away countries. We forget that we used to be just like them, but we have moved on and accepted new methods in recognizing the line between state and church, with for the most part the state coming out on top. We in the west have almost learned that the state rules in the here and now and the church can worry about the after we are dead part. So if you commit an act that the church says is a sin and you should be punished, and the state says that that act is fine then nothing will happen to you in the here and now and if some religious person wants to exact a religious punishment on you for your sin the state will see to it that they and not you are the one prosecuted in the eyes of the law. Oh and now you can’t report him to the police, he did nothing wrong.
