Do incoming Freshmen to UC Berkeley have to live on campus?

Apparently my mom heard from somewhere that UC Berkeley makes it mandatory for its Freshman class to live on campus as opposed to living at home or in an appartment close to the school. Is this at all true? Is this specific to just Berkeley or do other UC’s also enforce this rule?

You are not required to live on campus. The rumor may have stemmed from the two-year guaranteed housing for freshman; but that is only if you want to live on campus.

It’s not true. According to this web site, 3-5% of freshman Berkeley students do not live in on-campus housing. Most of these students live in the general vicinity of the campus. Additionally, if you forget to sign up for housing, you are referred by the Berkeley housing Web site to an outside company called CalRentals.

I don’t think any UC requires freshman to live on campus, but I could be wrong.
