Then, I suggest you read what the medical schools have to say: http://www.aamc.org/ There is so much info on that site that it will take you hours to digest it all.
This info is on the aamc site, but here’s a direct link to the info on the combined programs you asked for: http://services.aamc.org/currdir/section3/start.cfm
Once you’ve done some of this research, this link will help you research the residency programs that might interest you: http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html
I don’t want to discourage you, but your GPA isn’t going to be high enough for admission to a 6 year program. These are highly selective programs and they look for applicants with a demonstrated capacity to handle a heavy load of advanced placement courses.
Evidently, you’re guessing at what your IQ is. I wouldn’t mention it, as you’re indicating a high IQ that isn’t reflected in your GPA. A person can arrive at three conclusions with that info: 1) You’re misrepresenting your IQ. 2) You have been goofing off in school. 3) You really do have a high IQ and are poorly motivated. None of those are positive. Telling people you’re smart usually alienates them. Proving to people that you are smart impresses them. And medical schools are going to demand proof.
Presumably, you mean you were in the 99th percentile on the ITED. That is an excellent score (so you must have been goofing off in class, huh?) That indicates you have the potential, so I think you need to do a lot of research and have a serious discussion with your parents about your high school. If it’s not offering AP classes, then you may need to change to a school that does.
If you aren’t doing volunteer work, you need to start. The intent of volunteer work is to expose you to the real world of medicine and to dispel the romantic version that Hollywood creates. The closer you can get to health care being delivered, the better. A nursing home is a good place to start.
Since you took the ITED, I presume you live in Iowa. Attending a school in Illinois will mean you (meaning your parents) will have to pay the higher tuition costs of a non-resident. That can more than double the cost of school. In addition, state residents are given priority for admission (on average, 70% of matriculants are state residents). You would have a better chance of being admitted to a medical school in your own state, plus it will be the least expensive school (since you would be paying the resident’s tuition).
Something else you should explore since you’re currently attending a religious high school and that is a college and medical school that is the same religion. They will appreciate your education more than any other school. They may also be your best shot at a scholarship.
Good luck!
