Community college or the Navy?

I’m a 24 year old Chinese guy from Hong Kong. I came to the U.S. when I was 16. My education was just 5 years in high school in Philadelphia. I’ve been a server in Chinese buffet restaurants for years. I’m really tired of working like a dog for 86 hours/week. My meals were just the unhealthy rubbish on the buffet. I realize that I’m being dumb and my life is being colorless. Now I wanna refresh my life. Hope you all can help me and I will always appreciate. Should I get into the community college or the Navy to get education to be an interpretor? “The Navy has educational opportunities for almost everyone, whether you’ve just finished high school or already have an advanced degree.”

Personally, I’d be honored if you chose to serve my country. Of course, if you’re really motivated, you could do both. For education, Navy might be difficult since you could be on a ship and attending class is therefore difficult (although online classes are good). If you are motivated, I’d suggest Air Force. You are most likely to have a stable location, and like all military branches, they pay for your college (100% tuition while active duty!), and you could also sign up for the GI bill.

So military pros:

*They pay for your school (no loans!)

*They pay for your housing

*They give you leadership skills

Cons:

*They own you (though it’s a fair trade since they also build you up)

*They can move you whenever they want

*You have to work and go to college

College pros:

*You can finish your degree faster full time

Cons:

*Loans

*When you graduate, you’ll be competing for jobs with veterans who also have…..degrees (much more difficult)

My list is by no means comprehensive. I served in the Air Force and am very proud to have done so. It has given me memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. It also helped my pay for my Bachelor’s degree, so I hope you go military and get the best of both worlds!

PS. Military pays for your college while you’re in, GI Bill is used when you are OUT. Two different sources of getting your schooling paid for. Also, I’m not referring to tech school as college; the military will allow you to attend an actual college once you’re finished with tech school and on active duty status.

If you are prepared to be sent into combat, then join the Navy. But do not think of the military as a trade school. And do not be surprised if they train you for something different than what you want to be trained for. You can request to be trained as an interpreter, and that will count for something, but if the combination of the Navy’s needs and their assessments of your abilities says you should be a technician on a submarine, you’ll be a technician on a submarine.

There are, as has been mentioned, additional benefits to joining the military, like that you will get the GI Bill for college when you leave, and that for many jobs, especially civil service jobs, being a veteran counts for big bonuses. I think you will also get a fast track to citizenship, if you don’t have it already.

Thats a tough question…In the Navy you would work extra long and hard hours too, education is something that you would have to put forth a lot of effort to get, although the freinds and experience are really worth it. ( I served 21 years and don’t regret it at all) If you are truly interested in becoming an interpreter you should probably go the community college route, it would acually get you there quicker, although you would still be working the long hours to pay for it.

Join the military. Now is the time because:

1. you are young

2. we will be outta Iraq soon

3. they are paying lots of $ to meet their recruitment goals

4. looks good on a resume

5. instant respect from lots of people

6. you can always go to college later in life (GI bill will pay for it)

Difficult to say.

Community college means you won’t pay much to attend, but I’m not sure what you would want to do after you go to school.

The armed forces can also pay for you to go to college (although you may be too old to apply for their ROTC program at the age of 24). I believe with languages such as chinese and arabic they will also give you a sign-on bonus worth 10,000$+.

In any case, good choice deciding to improve your life! For only 8 years in America your English is astounding =)

First of all, are you even a U.S citizen? Because if you’re not, I don’t think you can get into the Navy.

I think too many look to the military as a quick way to pay for their education (which it is), but don’t seem to realize that your education won’t mean much if you’re sent off to war and come back a changed person (or don’t come back at all). Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the military is established here in this country for our protection, but anytime somebody wants to join strictly on the basis of a “fast/cheap track” to a degree, I say don’t do it.

Go Navy! if you dont know exactly what you want to do, then that is a great choice. its also a great choice if you want to get away from it all , travel, and figure out who you are.
