on the columbia application, they’re asking what books you’ve read in the last year. what books in particular are they looking for? what books shouldn’t be mentioned? Which should be?

If it’s in the “academic” section, then include books that are considered more intelligible, like Gulliver’s Travels, Macbeth – basically anything you read in your English class.

If it’s near the essay area, or personal interests, then include books that you read for leisure, even if they are in a series or seem cheesy. It’ll allow them to understand your interests, get to know who you are…and reading of mostly any type is great one way or another!

Of course, don’t include anything like self-help books…

Avoid any “thrillers” or anything like that…like Stephen King, Tom Clancy–anything in a series, really. Then again, don’t put something ridiculously serious that they know you DEFINITELY haven’t read for pleasure, like Orwell’s 1984.

I’m guessing all the books that you’ve read, just name them all.
