college transfer?

i live in california and i want to go to a JC first and then transfer to like UCLA or berkley. next year i’ll be a senior and it’ll be impossible to get in directly with my gpa and sat score. my skoo counseler is pressuring me to try for other uc/csu but i wanna get to ucla or berkley to make my parent proud, but if i go to jc first, my parent will be dispointed anyways, and people say i’m not guarentee to go to those if i transfer. what should i do

Apply to them anyway. Regardless of what your GPA is current;y or what your SAT scores are, you have to realize that these things are only a fraction of what 4-year universities (especially in California!) look for. This is definitely in your favor.

I suggest that you focus on the things that you can help now. Try to bring up your grades. Write one hell of a essay, list things that you have done inside and outside of your school (including work experience, if you have any) and try to get outstanding letters of recommendation from your teachers and your counselor(s).

What’s the worse that can happen? You’ll be denied? Then you’ll just go to a JC and work from the ground up…

If you end up going to a JC, most of them in California have a transfer program already established with 4-year universities. I know that Solano Community College has a program set up that guarantees admission to Berkeley or Davis (your choice) if you complete XYZ classes with a certain GPA. You have to sign up for this upon registering, so you’ll have to tell your college counselor that you plan to do this and to set you up with the right courses — otherwise a lot of your classes won’t transfer when you are ready to move.

Again, I strongly encourage you to apply anyway. What’s the worst that will happen? If you don’t try, you’ll never know and you might just be surprised.

Best of luck!

Nicolas is right!!

Many state school are developing programs with community colleges for direct enrollment once ans associates is complete. Contact UCLA tomorrow. They possible have a recruiter specifically for transfers and can give you some statistics so you can get a feel of what you are looking at.

I went to CC and they had a gauranteed acceptance with the local state school. sounds crazy but true.

The best advice is to do the best you can regardless of where you go because if you go to another UC school and do poor, your screwed from transfering anways.

Good Luck and stay positive. You are already on the right track by planning ahead!!!

Sounds like you’re getting good advice. UCLA and Berkeley are tough to get into. They don’t accept very many transfers. Won’t you feel foolish if you slave away at a jc for two years and still don’t get in? The other UCs are excellent schools. Give them a try. You’ll be glad you did, and so will your parents.

Try to get in other UC schools first. If you get in, you can try to transfer after the 2nd year. If you don’t get into any UCs, then take the JC route. I took the JC route, got 3.8 GPA and transfered to UCLA.

Good luck!

Well, if you wanted, you could transfer to Berkeley or UCLA from another UC or CSU school. I’d advise you not to put your life on hold just because you may not get into Berkeley or UCLA.
