Well, what will happen if you don’t?

I’m always terribly concerned when I see this kind of thing, because no kid deserves to be terrified of a bunch of college committee people.

Trust me: your life will not be over if you find yourself at one of the state schools. Or at least it won’t be over if you get real about the whole matter. The Ivy League schools are very good, and the reason they are is that they take very good care of their students. However, if you’re mature enough to make your own way in life, and if you’re planning on being a dedicated student, almost any school can be your personal Harvard.

In the meantime, please live your life for yourself, not for the Scholastic Aptitude Test. You’ll be okay.

Ivy league schools are great. They’ve been around forever, it seems. (Not as long as Oxford or Cambridge, but for the States, sure.) But…there are lots of great schools out there. You should be looking at which school is best for the program you want to go into. Harvard is not the top school for all fields, so you need to take that into consideration. Have you been to Harvard? Taken a visit in the middle of February? It’s brisk. Talked to students about life outside academia and what to expect? Not bashing Harvard by any means, but there are lots of schools to consider for other factors than they’re in the Ivy League.
