Choosing a profession of either a pharmacist or a primary physician?

I cannot decide between these two careers and its already my junior year in high school. I’m debating whether to major in cellular biology and minor in chemistry or philosophy. Or I might hopefully enroll into Rutgers New Brunswick Pharmacy School, which I heard is difficult and most of the students drop out, I am indecisive. I know of the benefits and years of education of both careers but I cannot choose.

Your best bet is to go to a school where you could do either. You have to have at least 3 years of college before you can get into either program and by that time you will better know. As a college student myself, it is much easier to decide what you want to do once you start taking the classes that help you to better see what you will be doing. Also, job shadow a couple people in places similar to what you think you might want to do (ex. hospital pharmacist, chain pharmacist, family doctor), many professionals are very willing to let people shadow them to get a better idea about what the profession is. It’s also a great way to see if you would really want to do that or not before you spend thousands of dollars and then change your mind.

There are many advantages to becoming a pharmacist.

Below are some of them:

1) Great pay, expect to be paid 75-150k coming right after pharm school

2) You will always have a job anywhere in the US becuase there is a great demand for these healthcare professionals

3) Most jobs are 9-5. This will give you weekends and other free time to start your pharmacy business or other ventures

4) Flexible work schedule enables you to choose when and what type of pharmacy you want to practice.

5) If you are really serious about pharmacy, visit http://www.pre-pharm.info

Only you can decide! Do you want to spend about 12 years in school with great sacrifice or about 6 years?? From the feel I get from your question, I think you could handle becoming a doctor and the work it takes to get there. However, have you been very studious thus far? Is your GPA good? With either choice, you have to be practically the best of the best to get into medical or pharmacy school. Best of luck with your choice.

I have no answer for you but I’m giving you a star for being concerned about your future instead of what clothes you should wear to school and “Does he like me?”.
