If you don’t think my odds are good, what UC schools do you think I’d have a good shot at?
Favorite Answer
(My point — I am a credible, trained alumnus, but NOT AN OFFICIAL SOURCE of information!)
Also, admissions vary within each campus. Each campus determines their own admissions policies.
1) In state applicants receive priority over out-of-state
2) UCLA performs comprehensive review, so it is not just a numbers game. Every application is reviewed by three people (admissions staffers and/or trained alumni volunteers)
3) Leadership and depth in a particular area is typically favored over broad, shallow involvement in extracurriculars.
4) Grades and scores aren’t everything, but they mean a lot.
5) Demanding schedules are given priority over less-demanding schedules. (Take hard classes. Easy ones won’t do you much good.)
6) USC is not a UC. It’s a private school with a very different set of admissions criteria, cost, and education quality than any UC. (I do not have the data in front of me, but I would be very surprised if USC were considered more selective than UCLA. UCLA is one of the hardest schools in the nation to get into. USC does not traditionally have that reputation.)
7) Within top ten public schools (national rankings, last time I checked, which may be outdated, but these things don’t move around much year-to-year): Cal #1, UCLA #3, UCSD #6, UCD, UCI tied at #10
8) There is no interview, just an essay.
9) The time of when you submit your application has ABSOLUTELY NO BEARING on your admissions chances. UC applications are ONLY accepted during a two month window (Oct 1 – Nov 30) and there is NO EARLY ADMISSIONS.
At first glance, here are my impressions:
— Your GPA is a little on the low side, but not necessarily problematic. SAT is perhaps a bit on low side. Try ACT, also. Different testing methodology and can result in dramatically different score.
— Student Body Pres and captain of two teams is good
— Vounteer work is good
— Would need more info on level of difficulty of classes.
— Out of state works against you. Much, much smaller quota for out-of-state applicants, so you really have to be the best-of-the-best from out of state.
