Can you work as a counselor w/ a bachelor’s in psych and a minor in counseling?

http://www.leeuniversity.edu/academics/

Those are the programs my school offers. I am majoring in psychology and I am conserned w/ job opputunities when I graduate. I want to be able to use my degree while in grad school. At my school they offer a counseling minor and social work minor for behavioral health. So can I work as a counselor if I minor in counseling? or can I work as a social worker if I minor in social work? What are some other routes I can take to guarentee a job after I graduate?

It depends on what you mean by work as a counselor. If you mean a camp counselor…then yes. If you mean a psychotherapeutic counselor then the answer is a bit more grey. Anyone can hang a shingle out and say you do “counseling” it is a non-protected term. However, to be licensed as a “counselor” and to therefore be a Licensed Professional Counselor you need a Masters.

The minimum degree to be a social worker is the BSW. A minor in social work really does not mean much in the employment world. In some states and some counties you may still be able to get a job in a state agency that uses the title “social work assistant” with a BA in any field.

The BA in psych really only prepares you for graduate school and a liberal arts degree. It generally is not considered as preparing you for a professional job in psychology or the human services. Given this you may want to prepare yourself to go on for an MA in counseling psych or social work.

You won’t be able to do direct counseling with only a BA or BS in psychology. You will definitely (at least) require a Master’s degree. However, there are plenty of jobs that you will qualify for with your undergraduate psychology degree – especially with a social work, or counseling kicker (minor).

Here is a link to an internal document we send around at my school: http://www.psych.iupui.edu/ungrad/docs/Jobs%20Held%20by%20IUPUI%20Psychology%20Alumni.pdf

It highlights a FEW jobs that students with undergraduate psychology degrees hold.*

*You will see that some of the students do have “counseling” positions. However, it is odd – and they usually have on-job training and massive amounts of other experience though.

For the most part, you’ll be able to get a great job in management, administration, etc with just your regular degree. That will definitely help you get through grad school.

Good Luck! Stay focused.
