Can I still get into Med School?

I have a 2.9 GPA in a Business Degree I got from U of Michigan.. but I can’t find a job in my field and its been over a year since I graduated.. Im considering the medial field and began taking my pre-med courses but I dont want to waste my time if Im not going to get in.. I’m thinking of doing a Secondary degree in nursing which is an accelarated program for people who already have bachelor’s

Would you enjoy being a nurse? It can be nasty at times, you deal with sick people daily on a highly personal level, and can be stressful.

Also the nursing textbooks I have seen are cluttered with sociology/psychology terms that are highly time sensitive and not found in medical school texts. I myself could not stand reading such ‘fluff’.

Do not get me wrong, nurses are important caregivers that society needs. Their education programs are meant from the get go to be subservient to medical doctors.

For that reason, their chemistry courses are dead-end classes, with no higher level classes they can take. This policy is oppressive. It should be changed, so that eventually if the nurse were to progress in her/his education they could eventually raise to the full level of doctor of medicine.

If you are considering Nursing, also consider Medical Technology to become ASCP certified. Work in that area for a few years, being very studious to improve yourself, and you will be better qualified to become a medical doctor.

Also, an experienced ASCP technologist could get into a graduate program in Microbiology or Clinical Biochemistry.

Well, what you need to do is get all A’s, meaning no A -‘s on all of your pre-med classes, and start volunteering at hospitals associated with the med school you want to apply to. Study like crazy for the MCAT and take some practice tests. If you get a 4.0 on all of the pre-med classes you take and you do very well on the MCAT you can get into med school, though you may need to bost your GPA a bit more by taking extra classes after you get your pre-med stuff done. If you really want to do this, and are willing to spend the time and money to take the classes you need, and get A’s in all of them, go for it.
