CalArts Character Animation?

I am currently a freshman in high school and am planning to apply to CalArts’ Character Animation program in a few years. I’m begginning to take drawing and portfolio classes, and recently realized a possible problem. I suffer from an eye condition known as Achromatopsia, which means I do not see any colors, just black, white, and shades of gray. I wanted to know if that would cause a problem with creating a portfolio for any art college, because they usually like to see artwork with color.

I would also like to know if my colorblindness could cause a problem with the education part of animation.

I don’t think this will cause a problem with your admissions portfolio. You should definitely disclose this disability on your application. Maybe, if there’s an essay, you can talk about how this makes you see things and approach things differently from most, etc. That’d be interesting, and it’d explain the lack of color in your portfolio in a very upbeat, positive way.

When I applied to art school, I maybe only had one piece with color. My portfolio was actually quite simple – it was mostly my drawings from my life drawing classes, plus some b&w landscape sketches. So I’m not sure that use of color is 100% a requirement, and especially in your case, where you have a very valid reason for perhaps not doing so.

I don’t think it will cause a problem with your education, so long as the professors know about it up front and are willing to work with you. Needless to say, you may need to talk to them about waiving out of color theory class – or maybe, even there, adaptations can be made? And you’ll need to take a different approach to some of the class assignments, but I think that the professors will be willing to be flexible on this, so long as the overall quality of your work is good.

CalArts, btw: good choice. For animation in California, you can also look at the strong programs at UCLA and USC.

for my area, i think of that Picasso is over-rated! keep in mind that for each Brad fowl there are hundreds of different proficient animators who’re working interior the action picture industry, contributing effective and critical artwork. i don’t understand what standards Cal Arts use to decide on destiny scholars, yet i’m specific you stand as plenty threat as the different applicant with animation skills. additionally, keep in mind which you flow to college to benefit. scholars for many bigger training institutions are many times chosen on the muse of what they could grow to be. of direction, this could be based on the place you start up off from, yet provide it a attempt. i understand that rejection is a threat, yet prepare besides. whenever you’re making contributions artwork as a expert, there is likewise the prospect of the artwork being rejected and having to be re-finished. have faith interior the generic your artwork; in case you like it, and your persons and relatives like it, then the probability is that’s sturdy. As i’ve got already pronounced, the down-area is which you would be rejected. Even then, this won’t be with the aid of generic of your artwork. there are basically a constrained form of areas for any direction, particularly widespread ones including those presented by ability of Cal Arts. finally, however, the appropriate determination would be right down to Cal Arts. you will no longer understand in the event that they’ll settle for you except you prepare. provide it a flow – you’re pleasantly shocked. each and every of the final, and sturdy success,
