I go there. If the rest off your class left thats ok, but most of our teachers, will put up a post on the door, its ok if your miss one class though. I have left before when the teacher wasnt there after 10m next time call though, your teachers voice mail, or check black board in a lab to see if he posted something about it.

I’m not sure if it applies specifically to CSUF, but at most colleges, waiting on a professor for 15 minutes is primarily a courtesy, not a rule.

Frankly I applaud you and your classmates’ patience. Did no other faculty or staff member come in to tell you if the class had been cancelled for the day? This might be a sign that the professor didn’t even call in her or his absence from class, which violates faculty rules (see link below).

I hope you inform the dean of liberal arts about this. You have a legitimate complaint if the prof did not show up for class and made no effort to inform students of the cancellation.

I work at a college, know a thing or two about rules for faculty and staff.

I’ve never known of any school where it was a formal rule; it is more of a rule of thumb. Now that everyone has cell phones, calling the department office to find out what happened would make sense. The professor could have called in to report that he was in a horrible traffic jam, or that his car broke down. And if it was the first day of the semester, he could have been told to go to the wrong room. If he collapsed somewhere, someone could have checked up on him and it could have saved his life. On the other hand, I’ve fired professors who showed up significantly late just because they hadn’t planned properly and didn’t show any remorse. He doesn’t have the right to waste people’s time if he can help it.

It’s not actually a formal rule. I’d play it safe and stay longer even after people leave. I once had an instructor show up 5 minutes before class was supposed to end. There were only 4 of us left waiting. We got credit for being there that day. If you do plan to leave, try waiting a bit longer and then leave them a message on their voicemail, email and/or with the department. It’ll give you the benefit of doubt.
